The organisation Slap Tomorrow was launched in June 2013 with a forum to create awareness in the Shepparton Community on the developing climate change issue (see past projects). Slap Tomorrow has continued as an organisation dedicated to keeping the public of Shepparton aware of climate change .
Slap Tomorrow had a substantial influence leading up to Greater Shepparton Greater City Council’s declaring a climate emergency in March 2020
At its September 2024 meeting the members of Slap Tomorrow agreed to discontinue the Incorporated Body called 'Slap Tomorrow' but continue as an informal discussion and advocacy group.
The challenges associated with climate change continue to be a major issue that must be addressed by government bodies at all levels, and we are proud as an organisation to have played a small part in increasing public awareness.
Cooking For a Better Future was an idea developed by Sebastian Wright and his team at Wanganui High School in 2016 as part of the Big Idea Project. Seb’s idea was to provide work experience in the restaurant trade for disadvantaged young people in Shepparton District. From this idea a collaborative project has developed between The Connection, Berry Street, Wanganui Students and Slap Tomorrow. Thirty people attended the first dinner.
The first Cooking For a Better Future Dinner and launch of the project was enjoyed at the The Connection on Thursday 11 May.
The second dinner was held on Thursday July 20 when highly regarded chef, Stefano de Pieri spoke as an after dinner speaker.
The third dinner was held on Friday 10 November and featured climate changes sciientist, David Karoly as guest speaker.
The fourth Cooking For a Better Future Dinner event was Music Warming For a Warming World. Part of the 2018 arts festival on Sunday 18 March.
Further events are planned in the future with entertainment such as music, theatre and poetry as well as after dinner speakers at every dinner. In the future there may be an opportunity for Businesses and Corporations to support this idea by requesting a dinner for your staff through Cooking For a Better Future. Cooking For a Better Future Dinners will be held at The Connection with menus and food prepared by Berry Street Students under Felicia’s guidance.
