The organisation Slap Tomorrow was launched in June 2013 with a forum to create awareness in the Shepparton Community on the developing climate change issue (see past projects). Slap Tomorrow has continued as an organisation dedicated to keeping the public of Shepparton aware of climate change .
Slap Tomorrow had a substantial influence leading up to Greater Shepparton Greater City Council’s declaring a climate emergency in March 2020
At its September 2024 meeting the members of Slap Tomorrow agreed to discontinue the Incorporated Body called 'Slap Tomorrow' but continue as an informal discussion and advocacy group.
The challenges associated with climate change continue to be a major issue that must be addressed by government bodies at all levels, and we are proud as an organisation to have played a small part in increasing public awareness.
George Marshall is the founder of England’s Climate Outreach Information Network. He is author of the book, “Don't Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change”.
The Melbourne-based organizations, Psychology of a Safe Climate and the Sustainable Living Festival brought George to Australia in 201. But it was George himself who agreed to add another event to his already busy agenda and visit Shepparton on February 16 2015.
He explained to his Shepparton audience, that when confronted with something that offends our values or is likely to disrupt our lives, we deny it or rationalise it away, or don’t even think about it. His research explains why that is so, and why problems associated with human induced climate change are so difficult to communicate, and denied by many people.
George says climate change is the most pressing problem humanity has ever faced and needs to be discussed rather than ignored, and so he encourages others to supress their biases to accept and address this reality, and talk about it.
